Three therapists who wanted to build something better.
Flourish & Thrive Counseling is a trauma-informed private practice in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, founded by Kayla Miller, Kim Heine and Emma Martin.
It started with a shared dream.
Flourish & Thrive began as a conversation between three clinicians who each held the same quiet ambition: to build a practice of their own. Not a bigger one. A better one.
We wanted a space that felt comfortable, inviting, nurturing and genuinely healing — for our clients first, and for the people doing the work alongside them. We wanted rooms that lower your shoulders when you walk in, not rooms that make you count ceiling tiles.
The name came from what we want for the people who sit across from us: to grow into the best version of themselves, to be mentally healthy, to feel vibrant, and to prosper. To develop personally. To feel fulfilled in their day-to-day lives. To feel successful and empowered in a way that lasts past the last session.
That is what it means to flourish. That is what it means to thrive.
Trauma-informed, all the way down.
We are all clinicians who have done a great deal of trauma work. It is not a specialty we added — it is the ground the whole practice is built on.
Trauma threatens a person's sense of safety and well-being, and it leaves behind intense emotional distress that does not respond to being told to move on. It shows up as anxiety that will not quiet down, anger that arrives faster than thought, relationships that keep repeating the same shape, and children whose behavior is telling a story nobody has decoded yet.
Flourish & Thrive was created by trauma-informed clinicians to help individuals, children and families acknowledge what happened to them, process the emotions safely, and gradually rebuild a real sense of safety and control.
Practically, that means we build safety before we build anything else. We move at your pace. We explain what we are doing and why. And we never ask you to go further into a memory than you are ready to go.
We are here to help individuals, children and families feel heard, feel mentally healthy, and grow into the best version of themselves.
We facilitate healing and wellness whether the work is a small day-to-day frustration or deeply rooted trauma. We are here for all of it.
Our goal is a strong therapeutic alliance — the kind where a client walks in confident that they will leave feeling more secure in themselves than when they arrived.
Five things we hold to.
You are the expert on you
Every person is the expert of their own story. Our role is to provide a safe, supportive space where you feel heard and empowered — not diagnosed at.
Children deserve to be heard
Children are not small adults and they are not problems to be managed. Behavior is communication, and we treat it that way.
Safety comes first
No meaningful work happens in a body that does not feel safe. That is true of the room, the relationship and the pace.
Fit matters more than volume
Not every therapist is right for every client. We would rather refer you well than keep you poorly.
Everyone is welcome
All ages, all backgrounds, all identities, all family shapes. We want to serve this community well — the whole of it.
